After nearly ten years of struggle and sacrifice, Osama bin Laden was pronounced dead after United States soldiers received intel of the al-Qaeda leader's whereabouts in the city of Abbottabad, Pakistan.
A small team of U.S. operatives launched a "targeted assault" on the mansion-like compound, where months of intelligence work had established that Mr. Bin Laden was stationed there. Troops entered the facility and engaged in a firefight, resulting in Osama's death, and the soldiers took custody of his body.
President Barack Obama made the announcement last night around 11:30pm EST but due to the power of the Internet, social media sites like Twitter and Facebook were already spreading the news like wildfire. Almost within moments young faces sprung up in front of the White House to celebrate by singing the National Anthem.
To make the point at how quickly viral Osama's death was heard around the world, SLAM Magazine's Senior Editor Tzvi Twerskytweeted, "Want to see amazing? Turn on ESPN and watch the Phillies-Mets. Players are dumbfounded as to why fans are chanting 'USA'."
