Remember Grindhouse? You know, the movie from a few years ago that was a split feature with one flick by Quentin Tarantino, the other by Robert Rodriguez. Anyone who saw it in theaters caught the trailers for fake films like Eli Roth's Thanksgiving too and Rob Zombie's Werewolf Women of the SS too. Machete was also one of those movies with a tongue-in-cheek, fictional trailer in Grindhouse, which is why today's official trailer release is coyly being marketed as "illegal", but it's really because Rodriguez went ahead and made it into a real feature film, taking advantage of a script he'd had on deck since 1993.
We already knew the movie was stacked with stars: Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Steven Seagal, and even Lindsay Lohan in her return to screen after a multi-year hiatus. This first look lets us know that the grindhouse style is intact and Machete has a good chance of living up to the hype its cult supporters have placed on it. The title character is referred to as "the wrong Mexican to fuck with", so it's no coincidence that we got this preview on Cinco de Mayo, but the movie actually drops in September, over Labor Day weekend.
