After dominating the news cycle with a series of controversial tweets last week, Kanye West rolled out a new track called “Lift Yourself”—his first release since 2016’s The Life of Pablo.
Like many of you, Joey Badass had high hopes for the single, as it was promised to deliver fire “bars” dedicated to Hot 97 host Ebro Darden:
Despite Kanye’s bizarre political musings, Joey was eager to hear what the MAGA hat-wearing rapper had up his sleeve. But, as we no know, “Lift Yourself” was nothing more than a troll song that featuring nothing more than a 1970s soul sample and scatological gibberish.
Joey’s reaction to the track was featured in the second installment of Pro Era’s Amerikkkana Tour docu-series. And the moment is pretty relatable.
At the 12:40-minute mark, the Brooklyn-bred rapper pulls out his phone after learning ‘Ye dropped a new song. He says, “Oh this the shit that he was talking about to Ebro, that got the bars and all that. Shit better have bars, nigga.”
After listening to most of the song, Joey starts to question when exactly ‘Ye will begin rapping. The track then builds momentum with a bass-heavy beat, before Kanye jumps into that whole “poopy-di scoop” rhyme.
Joey seemed amused. After realizing it was a troll move, he fell back onto a couch and began laughing. Of course, he couldn’t wait to share the song with his crew.
