EMPATH is a Los Angeles–based contemporary womenswear label founded in 2021 by Japanese-Singaporean designer Emily Arakawa. Informed by her upbringing between cultures and shaped by the visual language of Tokyo, the label explores the tension between restraint and sensuality through a distinctly refined lens. Drawing from Japanese archival grunge, understated utility, and the precision of ’90s minimalism, EMPATH recontextualizes nostalgia into modern silhouettes with quiet complexity. Designed and produced entirely in Los Angeles, each collection is developed in collaboration with local ateliers and small-scale manufacturers, emphasizing craftsmanship, intentionality, and limited production. Materials are sourced through a considered mix of locally acquired deadstock and specialty textiles imported from Japan and Korea, selected for their tactile depth, longevity, and natural composition. EMPATH approaches dressing as an emotional and physical experience — balancing structure with softness, familiarity with subversion, and ease with elevated form.
