Of Course 'Deadpool' Was the Most Pirated Movie of 2016

'Deadpool' tops the list of 2016's most pirated movies, surprising absolutely no one.

Deadpool, astutely named the best film of 2016 by Betty White, was illegally downloaded by frugal pirates more than any other movie last year. According to Torrent Freak's annual breakdown of cinematic piracy trends, Ryan Reynolds' magnum opus made a big enough dent on the torrent anti-market to beat out other confirmed money collectors like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Captain America: Civil War for the No. 1 spot.

Elsewhere in the top 10, other box office victors such as Suicide Squad and Finding Dory make commendable appearances. The ranking, which complies the most-torrented films of the year regardless of release date using download stats from public BitTorrent trackers, also includes the flabbergastingly bad Independence Day: Resurgence. Not even our lord and savior Jeff Goldblum could save that one from abject mediocrity.

Peep Torrent Freak's full top 10 list below, preferably while repeatedly reminding yourself that we in no way condone the illegal downloading of motion pictures:

  • 1. Deadpool
  • 2. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
  • 3 . Captain America: Civil War
  • 4. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
  • 5. X-Men Apocalypse
  • 6. Warcraft
  • 7. Independence Day: Resurgence
  • 8. Suicide Squad
  • 9. Finding Dory
  • 10. The Revenant

If movies aren't really your bag, then you're probably no fucking fun whatsoever. Also, maybe TV shows are more your speed? Torrent Freak also ranked TV-centered piracy last week, revealing that HBO's Game of Thrones was the most pirated show for the fifth consecutive year. The Walking Dead, which didn't exactly deliver its finest season last year, came in second.
