Fast-fashion retailer Forever 21 has sent a formal apology to a customer after her open letter criticizing the store’s music went viral on social media.

The teenage girl, named Gabrielle Singh, turned out to be the daughter of Gurmit Singh, a famous Singaporean actor who took to his Facebook page to support his child’s position against the retailer’s decision to play misogynistic rap music.

In her Tumblr post, Gabrielle announced she would be boycotting Forever 21 after a recent visit to the store that included “vulgar” rap lyrics played throughout.

“Earlier today, around 8pm, I was in your Somerset 313 outlet," she wrote. "I was there with my mother and my baby sister, and the moment we stepped in, your store was blaring rap music. Fine. I don’t mind rap. What I did mind was the lyrics, which declared “half you b***hes like p***y too."

Gabrielle explained that it is highly inappropriate for Forever 21 to play music that is “condoning abuse towards” females as the store’s primary demographic is young women. She also went on to reference research from the American Academy of Pediatrics’ article “Committee on Public Education,” which explains that explicit lyrics mold our perception of the world around us.

Soon after the letter went viral, a Forever 21 manager contacted her to apologize for the music. Gabrielle’s father has since updated his Facebook page with a message that read: “Have taken down the post re Forever21. Manager has been contacted. Thanks all for your opinions and sharing.”
