Best of a Bad Situation? Cowboys Trade For Bills' Matt Cassel

With Tony Romo out for awhile, Dallas appears to be seeking a replacement not named Brandon Weeden.

Tony Romo is hurt. The Cowboys are probably desperate. You would be too if Brandon Weeden was set to start a string of games for you.

With that in mind, Dallas pulled off a trade this afternoon sending a 2017 fifth-round pick to the Buffalo Bills who sent back quarterback Matt Cassel and also (for some reason) a 2017 seventh-round pick. This comes literally a day after GM/Owner Jerry Jones expressed (almost certainly fake) confidence in Weeden.

In his career Cassel is 34-38 as a starter. In three starts last year the 33-year-old passed for 425 yards alongside three touchdowns and four picks for the Vikings. All he'll be asked to do for the Cowboys is tread water until Tony Romo is back (which should be around eight weeks/seven games from now). Of course, without Dez Bryant that'll be easier said than done.
