Aside from telling us that he just wanted to make "something that people could play on Fourth of July," Childish Gambino hasn't said too much in the press about his new song "This Is America" and its breathtaking Hiro Murai-helmed video. TMZ, ever the botherers of accomplished artists, tried to get Gambino to elaborate further on the video's meaning Wednesday and awesomely received absolutely nothing.
"Uh, that's not for me to say," Gambino said on his way out of the Peppermint Club in West Hollywood Wednesday night.
Gambino was in WeHo for the Stevie Wonder Song Party, a celebration of Wonder's upcoming 67th birthday. T.I., Jessie J, Kelly Rowland, Good Charlotte's Joel and Benji Madden, Craig Robinson, and Nick Cannon were also in attendance.
Gambino creative director and Wolf + Rothstein member Ibra Ake recently gave an extensive interview to WNYC about "This Is America," including what this watershed moment means for Gambino moving forward. "I think we like to keep stuff under wraps, but there's more coming, and we like to think of ourselves as like the Avengers every time we can assemble and all our schedules are in line," Ake said. "That's happening right now and we're working rapidly to just get as much out as we can. Especially this last run, to really make a big bang, because this is Donald's last album."
Though the apparent status of this upcoming project as Gambino's last has been mentioned before, it's still not entirely clear whether Donald Glover is simply retiring the Gambino name or stepping away from music for good.
