ScHoolboy Q's latest album Oxymorondebuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart last week, a feat the Los Angeles-based rapper could likely continue in the future given his current status as one of the West Coast's premier artists. Success aside, Q hasn't been completely satisfied with the results of his music since since signing to Interscope, telling Grantland he had to make artistic compromises on his major label debut.

His feelings on the subject were echoed during an interview with Joey Franchize and DJ Buck of Hot 93.7 in Hartford, CT last week, where ScHoolboy admitted he should have stayed an independent artist. “I already did wrong by signing a rap contract,” he said. “I’m not talking about TDE, but how we ventured off with the majors. I wish we would have still stayed indie. I don’t care about being on like 100 radios or shit like that. I love Interscope, but I wish I could have just stayed with TDE.”

Kendrick Lamar and ScHoolboy Q were recently featured on the cover of Billboard, where TDE co-president Dave Free mentioned in the cover story they are planning to release a Black Hippy album. Joey Franchize asked about the project, though he called it a mixtape, which prompted ScHoolboy Q to explain TDE's no-mixtape policy. “We don’t do mixtapes. We don’t put mixtapes out," he stated. "Everything we drop is an album. We don’t play that mixtape game. We put all our time and effort into one project, to make it great instead of just doing songs for a tape. That means you’re not focused on your album.”
