Woman Killed in Crash After 12-Year-Old Falls on Car in Apparent Suicide Attempt

Authorities say the woman died at the scene.

According to NBC's Washington, D.C. affiliate, a woman was killed when a 12-year-old boy struck her car in an apparent suicide attempt.

Maria Harris, a 22-year-old grad student from Maryland, was said to have been driving on I-66 with her boyfriend in an SUV when her vehicle was struck by the boy, who jumped from an overpass. While the boy survived the fall, Harris died at the scene. Her boyfriend is said to have steered the vehicle to safety after the SUV was struck.

While Harris' boyfriend was unhurt in the situation, the 12-year-old is said to have been rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Word is that while fencing is up on this overpass, it doesn't cover the entire overpass, making it easier to get out there. It's also being reported that the police initially thought it was a man who'd jumped from the overpass.

Harris is said to have been studying clinical counseling at Marymount University in Arlington, and a memorial in her honor will be held at the university.
