Now in it’s twenty-third season, The Simpsons is the longest-running scripted television series in American prime-time. In four hundred plus episodes, the obvious laughs are often low-brow, but what has made the show such a success season after season are the satirical takes on popular culture. While the film, television and music references are easy to recognize, The Simpsons is often rather erudite with frequent nods to the art world.

Spanning from the renaissance masters to contemporary minds, here’s the complete history of art references in every Simpsons episode ever.

You mixed The Dream by Henri Rousseau and Wheat Field with Crows by Van Gogh. Other than that, cool list.

I might have just overlooked it in this screenshow, but isn't there an episode where Otto walks by their house, holding a painting, the Guernica (though i think it was in colour so it could be something else)? It might be the episode where they had a flood coming or something. (or was it the comet episode) I couldnt find it but i might just ahve overlooked it.

Hi Shaken + Blake, There are two references to Guernica in the Simpsons that I found. Otto carrying the painting is referenced in slide #74. Thanks for reading!

#22 is the statue of perseus not hermes, that is apparent by the fact the figure depicted is holding the decapitated head of medusa

There's a recreation of O. Winston Link's iconic photograph "Hotshot Eastbound" in the season 9 episode "Dumbbell Indemnity." Here's a blog post I wrote about it, along with a screenshot comparison of the original image and the Simpson's version: http://www.atomicdeathray.com/?p=442
