It’s not exactly a secret that fights take place in the stands during NFL games all the time. But on Thursday night, there was a fight that was particularly disturbing, and before you watch the video of it above, we should warn you that it is very graphic.
In the video, which was uploaded to Instagram by someone who was at the Panthers/Eagles game at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, a Panthers fan in a Cam Newton jersey can be seen sucker-punching a man in the face who was sitting behind him. The jersey-wearing fan then punches the man several more times before eventually fleeing from the stands with a woman believed to be his girlfriend.
You don’t see what leads up to the punches being thrown. But according to the person who posted the video on Instagram, it started when the man repeatedly asked the fan in the Newton jersey to sit down after he spent the majority of the game standing. Apparently, there was a child sitting in the area for the first half of the game, which prevented a fight from breaking out earlier. But once the child left, things got tense between the fan and the man, and it led to violence.
The Instagram user who posted the video claims the fan in the Newton jersey called the man he punched a "geriatric fuck," a "faggot," and a "hick" before he started swinging on him. Initially, reports indicated that the man may have been an Eagles fan, but the IG user later edited his caption to indicate that both fans were wearing Panthers gear at the game.
Here is the full caption:
dude bro & his chicka were standing for the entire game. words gradually got more and more escalated. there previously was a single mom and her son between us, they left halfway through the 3rd. after that, the lid was off. the dude took offense to the couple never sitting down and obstructing his view. the victim telling the dude bro how they’re being jerks and how rude they are for not sitting. the dude bro turns around and calls the victim a "geriatric fuck", "faggot", and "hick". then sucker punches him right in the face. i don’t know if he got away or left in handcuffs, but i hope it’s the latter.
edit: to clarify further, both the puncher and punchee were wearing Panthers attire.
The assailant was seated in section 541, row 24, seat 10.
The NFL is aware of the video, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, and they have launched an investigation into what happened.
According to TMZ Sports, the Panthers are also investigating the incident with help from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department. No arrests have been made at this time, and the fan in the Newton jersey has yet to be identified.
