Canadian staple Roots unveiled its collaboration with Toronto’s Mr. Saturday, showcasing a brand-new capsule featuring a variety of varsity jackets, hoodies, t-shirts, and sweatpants.

Joey Gollish, who runs Mr. Saturday, wanted to incorporate retro-futuristic themes into Roots’ classic comfy design.

“People often see Canadian fashion as lifestyle and leisure only,” Gollish explained in an Instagram post. “This work is proof that it can be more. It can be sensible and elevated while still feeling like the Roots we’ve always known.”

On Roots’ Instagram page, the Canadian outerwear company explained that the capsule was “inspired by jet set culture. The collection highlights an era when Roots operated its own airline, giving it a vintage look and feel.”

The collection also included a leather duffle bag, a passport holder, and luggage tags, further emphasizing Gollish’s aim to bridge the gap between comfy and stylish travel clothing.

In 2000, Roots launched an experimental project called Roots Air, a low-cost airline that operated in Vancouver, Calgary, and Toronto. According to a CBC article from 2001, Roots Air didn’t last long, struggling to live up to expectations. In May 2001, Roots Air shuttered after Air Canada purchased a stake in Skyservice, Roots Air’s parent company.

The jackets range from just under $1000 to $1500. The hoodies hover near the $200 mark, while the t-shirts and sweatpants are priced between $150 to $200.

The collection is available for purchase on Roots’ website.
