Sweat and Seurat It Out at Houston Makerspace, Which Is Basically a Gym for Artists

Anyone who has gone to art school has probably realized that you're given a plethora of resources as a student. Everything from oil pastels to table saws and 3D printers are readily available for use. Once you graduate and go on your merry way, however, even a decent workspace is hard to come by, let alone supplies and tools that can cost up to thousands of dollars. That's why a bunch of problem-solving champs in Houston are working on Houston Makerspace. It's a place where artists can gather and flex their creative muscles with a variety of resources.

In a nutshell, Houston Makerspace is basically a gym for artists. Instead of ellipticals and weights, however, the membership workspace includes a wood shop, metal shop, rapid prototyping lab (which really means laser-cutters and 3D printers), screen printing studio, just to name a few. Apparently, they've also acquired art gear for ceramics, glassbowing, and blacksmithing, too.

The much anticipated Houston Makerspace opens this Saturday, April 12. Membership for use of the art supplies starts at $150 per month, but that doesn't include workspace; you'll have to cough up a little more for that. For more information, go to Houston Makerspace's page here.
