Though his name may not be immediately recognizable to many, sculptor Alexander Calder is best known for inventing the kinetic mobile. Born to parents who were both artists, Calder found himself living and creating in a time when artistic conventions were constantly challenged, but the dude never lost his sense of imagination or play.
As an innovative thinker, Calder had a unique ability to see potential in various unlikely materials and subsequently changed the game with his suspended, moving sculptures. Paying homage to the late artist, Pace Gallery will kick off "Alexander Calder: The Art of Invention" as the inaugural show of its recently opened temporary exhibition in Menlo Park. It will feature over 25 of Calder's famous mobiles, colorful gouaches, wearable jewelry, and other fanciful creations. The show opens April 16 and will be on view until May 13.
