The Rick Owens Way

Complex Style reeled in a fucking marlin on this one. Our brethren got the opportunity to profile Rick Owens, designer, legend and general fashion Animorph who transcends the human species. Throughout a few days spent gallivanting around Greece and Italy, Chris Wallace, a person friend of Owens, gives us a look at the man himself outside of the typical setting of his famously brutalist studio/living space.

It's a fun story, not just focusing on the insane breadth and appeal that Rick has nowadays—which is bringing in about $120 million per year—but on his focus, attention to detail and how his influence has leaked into literally everyone's fashion sense, including the mainstream. The insight into who Rick is is littered throughout the piece, but is perhaps best shown in a couple of quintessential Rick anecdotes:

-While at a party for his shop-in-shop at Selfridges in London, Rick spots an executive wearing one of his jacket. He strides across the room and essentially yells about the stitching, takes the jacket from him and sends it back to his factory with a handwritten letter about the issue.

-Rick's planning some travel throughout the U.S. soon and has an architect at the Winnebago factory in Iowa building him a custom matte black mobile home.

-Rick really likes movies and while he doesn't "have any great burning desire to make a movie...if [he] did, [he] just knows that everyone would die in the end. And it would be beautiful."
