MTV's True Life is a classic reality series that has exposed some of the stranger aspects of life. I haven't watched an episode in a long time since I've sworn off pretty much all MTV programming since Pimp My Ride wrapped, but there was a new True Life last night and it was pretty, well, interesting to say the least, centering around peoples' bizarre fetishes not surprisingly ruining their lives. One of the subjects was RJ, a 23-year-old who is more than obsessed with sneakers. He claims that he is "obsessed with the look, taste, smell and feel of men's sneakers" to the point where he licks them down so much that he puts even Fat Joe to shame, giving a whole new meaning to the term "sneakerhead" if you catch my extremely graphic and disgusting gist. It's also the main reason why he is still single, he says, a plight I am sure many of our readers can relate to.
The full episode isn't online just yet, but Gawker has decent clip from the show. At one point he goes to the mall to scout for guys in sneakers, saying he will ask them straight up if he can lick their kicks, though he unfortunately strikes out on this particular visit. But on a magical first date, his companion actually asks him if he wants to play with his brand new shoes in the fucking restaurant. Sadly for our two love birds, they ended up calling it quits just a couple of dates later.
This has got to be the first time some man on sneaker romance has ever received air time anywhere, let alone on national television. I've doubted you, MTV. You're breaking barriers over there.
