Dazed just took a journey into 14-year-old fashion muse Mike The Ruler's kingdom and, to be completely honest with you, shit got real weird, real quick. The scene in Mike's parents' upper west side apartment is not unlike the scenes which transpired in my parents' basement back in middle school. But somehow, not only are there girls, but a couple of them are in their 20s. I don't know how Mike pulled that one off. Yeah, probably the promise of a magazine article, you're right. And, instead of a Halo 2 LAN party, Mike and co. shop online together and scout for the rarest of grails. Amongst the crew are other rare trill teens with style on the brain, including Luka Sabbat who was also featured in Vogue's story on fashion's new teen boy style icons. Damn, Cool Teens™ are really fucking crushing it these days, aren't they?
As Mike hosts the Dazed crew and chops it up with some of his young fashion-conscious peers, it's clear each of them has their own unique schtick and more personality than a Miss Congeniality pageant. I don't want to turn this into a knob slobbering New York Times piece about millenials or some shit, but these are today's teenagers, at least in NYC. They're wildly different than we were. Granted, I think these kids also take the cake in a competition to find the weirdest generation.
It's crazy how much I can hate, yet still kind of respect these kids. If I heard Mike say, "The garment itself is fucking beautiful" about a pair of Siki Im pants in my immediate vicinity, I'd bite through my tongue to suppress the urge to punch myself in the fucking face, but, all the same, he likes fashion. He is a fucking fashion nerd. And, at this point, isn't everyone reading this site? This kid memorized fashion shows intensely as a pre-teen after seeing the Alexander McQueen exhibit at the Met in 2011 with his dad, legitimately wrote a paper for school entitled "Helmut Lang vs. Calvin Klein," and claims it takes him TWO HOURS every morning to get dressed. At 14, I could never have said that and I doubt many others out there could either (though, I'm also not sure we would want to either). At the end of the day, regardless of what type of way you feel after seeing some shit like this, you can't say these kids aren't at the very least fucking original. (Asspizza? Sure, bro. Whatever.) But we probably also shouldn't edify them in a manner that anoints them the next street style stars or what have you, though it surely remains an imminent possibility. Teenagers were already annoying. We just hear about them more now thanks to the media. Oh shit, that's us too. My bad.
