Dapper Dan might be the most influential tailor in hip-hop history. In today's current climate of high-end hip-hop fashion, the designer's flare for patchwork Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and MCM garments can be viewed as revolutionary. But do you know the story behind designer's rise to prominence?

The New Yorker recently profiled the uptown designer and chronicled his humble beginnings as a man involved in African aide, to designing for some hip-hop's biggest names. Although the designer's Harlem-based shop closed in 1992, his legend lives on as the outfitter of some of hip-hop's most respected acts.
