Hypebeasts and street style bloggers of the world take caution: Tumblr is about to get all 1984 on your ass.
Starting this week, the website will begin working with photo-analysis company Ditto Labs to study the content of your fashion-related posts. More specifically, they'll be analyzing what labels are being worn and how said labels are perceived among users.
And if that wasn’t scary enough, the collected data will then be doled out to advertisers and brands for marketing and sales purposes. But that doesn’t mean you’ll be seeing a slew of targeted advertisements on your dashboard. The supposed intention is for companies to have a better understanding of brand affiliation.
“Right now, we're not planning to do anything ad-related,” said T.R. Newcomb, head of business development at Tumblr. “If Coke wants to understand the nature of the conversation about them on Tumblr, Ditto can sift through and deliver it to Coke."
Though this strategy is fairly off-putting, it looks like it is only the beginning. Earlier this year, Pintrest purchased a two-person company called VisualGraph, which appears to analyze visual content for data, as well.
So you might want to think twice before you hit that reblog button.
