McDowell+Benedetti's "Scale Lane Bridge" Adds a Comma to the River Hull

All bridges require advanced engineering and architecture, but this one demands even more. London-based McDowell+Benedetti architects' "Scale Lane Bridge" in Hull, England not only features a unique shape, but also includes a function (it allows the bridge to open and close to allow for boats to pass). Engineers Alan Baxter Associates and Qualter Hall participated in building the high-technology structure, which is programmed at a slow enough speed for pedestrians to remain roaming while the bridge is in motion.

While the bridge sometimes divides the River Hull, at the same time it connects Hull's Old Town with a less developed industrial area. It provides two curving paths on either side of a central space, which contains a restaurant and a rooftop viewing deck. The sloped walkways offer different levels from which to see views of the river.
