Architects Install a Dizzying Viewing Deck Inside an Active Volcano in Ecuador
Three architects install a high-rise viewing deck inside Ecuador's active volcanic Quilotoa crater.

If you've ever wanted to check out the inside of a volcano, this is your chance. Architects Javier Mera, Jorge Andrade and Daniel Moreno have created a high-altitude viewing deck perched above an expansive lake in the Quilotoa crater of the Ecuadorian Andes. The structure, which is made of steel and wood, provides breathtaking views of the lake and beautiful Ecuadorian landscape.
The platform extends over the cliff its built on, allowing viewers exciting new perspectives of the landscape beneath them. The Quilotoa crater is an active water-filled volcanic crater formed from an eruption almost 800 years ago. Viewers are treated to stunning panoramic views of the aquamarine lake that has an unusually vivid color as a result of the volcanic minerals present.
The platform was commissioned by the Ecuadorian Tourist Board. "The ministry aimed to support the venture of the community, helping its members to increase their income through their involvement in the provision of touristic services," stated the architects.
