7 Great Short Films to Look For From the Borscht 7 Film Festival (Miami)

Last weekend (as we mentioned) the 7th “quasi-annual” Borscht Film Festival took over the Arscht Center in downtown Miami, filling the sometimes-stuffy concert hall with a wild and varying group of South Florida film lovers. Ebullient and unrestrained, the festival’s producers and contributors bet the house and filled the program with 23 short films that clocked the event at almost three hours. Check out our seven favorite films from Borscht 7 that might help make MIA the next L.A.

Piratas

The piece that kicked it all off was a hilarious recount of piracy on the low canals of Miami. The captivating Julian “Bearclaw” Rodriguez gives an unabashedly raw account of the time his boat was stolen and he took matters into his own hands.

The Haircut

A paranoid film about getting a haircut that goes all wrong. Sound boring? Well, sometimes that’s all you need for a good short. Don’t overthink it, kids.

Man O War

Underwater artists Morphologic shot this macro film of one of the most dangerous creatures alive (captured in a bucket and brought to their lab) and blew the siphonophore up into abstraction. They then called in fellow submarine enthusiast Geologist (of Animal Collective fame) who created a haunting score to accompany the deadly, twitching colony.
