Out of All the Words in the English Language, Selfie Was Chosen As the Word of The Year

The future looks bleak...and filtered.

Has the Oxford English Dictionary offically jumped the shark? We could argue that they did a long time ago, but things keep getting worse. Today the OED announced that the 2013 International Word of the Year is selfie. Defined as "a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website," selfie beat out other great words including bedroom tax, binge-watch, bitcoin, olinguito, schmeat, showrooming, and twerk to claim its place in the history books. We don't dispute that selfies (and our collective narcissism) are out of control right now, but do we really want this to be how we as a species remember 2013? Can't we choose to show our good side, as we do in our conceited selfies? Please?
