According to Gallerist, a representative for David Zwirner has confirmed the death of conceptual artist On Kawara.
One of Kawara's best known works is his "Today" series, a collection of date paintings that the artist started 48 years ago on January 4, 1966. Of his work and life, Gallerist writes, "Kawara investigated the nature of time and played with the idea of identity in the face of death. He refused all interviews and declined to have his picture taken." An exhibition of the artist's work will go on display at the Guggenheim next February and will serve as the "first full representation of Kawara’s output, beginning in 1964 and including every category of work, much of it produced during his travels across the globe."
Kawara was 81 years old.
