Every year, nearly seven miles of New York City's streets are cleared of traffic so that residents and visitors can enjoy the city's "most valuable public space." Participants in the Summer Streets program can walk, skate, bike, dance, or do whatever they want down the vehicle-free streets, and there are several planned activities along the route for the hundreds of thousands of people who show up for the three consecutive Saturdays in August.

A major draw for the program is the installation in the Park Avenue Tunnel. Last year was the first time that the Tunnel was opened to foot traffic for Raphael Lozano-Hemmer's Voice Tunnel installation. This year, Jana Winderen's DIVE sound art installation promises an experience unlike any you've had on land.

Winderen worked with Tony Myatt to create the seven-block soundscape installation that transports visitors to the deep ocean with hydrophone recordings of underwater spaces around the world in countries including Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Canada, and Thailand. As you pass through the tunnel, the lights and sounds change to create the feeling of diving into different parts of the sea.

Artnet visited the installation recently and shared their experiences online. Sarah Cascone writes, "Despite the noise pollution caused by irreverent New Yorkers, if one paused to soak in the atmosphere, it did become transformative." To experience the DIVE installation for yourself, head to the Tunnel on Aug. 9 or Aug. 16 between 7 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. For more info, head to the Summer Streets website here.
