Was this some kind of April Fools' joke?
As noticed by Dazed, the new and highly anticipated Martin Margiela documentary was uploaded to Pornhub on Wednesday night, more than a week before its scheduled U.K. release.
The film, titled Martin Margiela: In His Own Words, explores the life and career of the elusive Belgian fashion designer, who was able to build one of the most successful and influential labels while remaining an enigma.
As of Friday afternoon, the documentary had apparently been taken down from the adult entertainment website, which suggests the distributor Dogwoof had not authorized upload.Â
In His Own Words was directed by Reiner Holzemer, the filmmaker behind the critically acclaimed Dries Van Noten documentary.Â
"I had just made a documentary about Dries Van Noten, and I was considering who in fashion would be a good following subject for a film," the director told CR Fashion Book. "I am interested in biographies as much as fashion, and I was really drawn to Martin through his story and his philosophy of creating fashion solely focused on the garments."Â
Holzemer went on: "I had heard that he was very publicity averse. People told me that I was dreaming if I thought he would work on a film about his life. ... Then there was the exhibition he curated with Olivier Saillard in Paris, and Martin was looking for someone to create interest in it. He and I met to discuss the project, and we began shooting the film four days after our first meeting."
In His Own Words will be available to stream on April 10 in the U.K. You can learn more about the documentary at Dogwoof's website.
