On the fifth episode of Complex's Get It Together, host Aleali May spends a day in New York City's SoHo neighborhood with Vashtie. They chop it up in front of Overthrow boxing gym before grabbing a bite to eat at Jack's Wife Freda.
The two discuss what it is like to be women in the streetwear and sneaker community, the importance of preserving New York City culture, Vashtie being the first female with an official Air Jordan collaboration, how she got the opportunity, starting her brand Violette, and more.
"I grew up as a tomboy. I was interested in things that, at the time, weren't mainstream and weren't cool for people of color and especially not women of color," says Vashtie. "I grew up loving streetwear and loving sneakers. At that time, there wasn't much of an option for girls. I just felt there was a brand that I have in mind, that I want to create, that really speaks to me. So, that's how my brand Violette was born."
