Drake and Future finally confirmed and then revealed the cover for their joint mixtape, What a Time to Be Alive, which drops tomorrow, Sept. 20. The cover is a photo of a cluster of diamonds, which some people have compared to Jay Z and Kanye West's Watch the Throne album cover. So what's the story behind the image Drake and Future used?
After some digging, we found the same image on Diamond Blend's blog (Diamond Blend is a luxury anti-ageing beauty brand). Then, much like Future's Dirty Sprite 2 album cover, found the exact photo on Shutterstock after seeing the image URL. The photo is owned by Christina Tisi-Kramer, a photographer based in NYC who specializes in shooting jewelry, cosmetics, accessories, fragrance, and landscapes. She currently teaches photography at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
According to Tisi-Kramer, the diamonds in the photograph are "some of the finest in the world." She originally shot them for Julius Klein Group, a company that rates the value and clarity of diamonds, while also saving some images she could sell to stock agencies. "It's one of my best selling images because of the nondescript luxury items that they are," she said via e-mail.
Tisi-Kramer admits she doesn't listen to Drake or Future (though she points out she knows who Kanye West is), but she says she's "flattered" that an artist used her image. She says she never knows where her images end up after selling them to stock agencies, but her goal is always to get more work from it. "Maybe [Drake and Future] will use me for something custom down the road," she says.
