For many, the introduction to fashion comes from their favorite hip hop and rap artists dropping the names of their own favorite brands. When A$AP Rocky or Kanye West drops a name, the power of their cosign is undeniable. But what if you could track that expression, and therefore influence, through tangible data? The people at GQ asked the same question and found out that it is kind of doable.
Working with Genius (previously Rap Genius), they analyzed 6,968 songs starting from the year 2000 and tracked the mention of fashion brands name by name, to find out who was getting the most shout outs. The method is admittedly not scientific (neither the popularity of an artist, nor the proliferation of single is weighted), but it is certainly entertaining.
The results shouldn’t prove too shocking for anyone who keeps their hand on the pulse, but one thing is for sure: Gucci is king. (Thanks Kreayshawn!)
