Raf Simons delivered the heat when he released his punk-inspired Sterling Ruby collection last year. However, for Spring/Summer 2015, the Belgian designer wanted to create something more personal—something that would reflect the origins of his illustrious career and give fans some insight to his unparalleled aesthetic.

Recently, Simons linked up with AnOther magazine for an exclusive interview, in which he shared the inspiration behind his graphic-loaded Introspective collection. It turns out, he was mostly inspired by vintage family photographs, and was generous enough to share those pictures and explain why they were so influential.

"This collection was not about shapes or forms, it was a kind of 'memory wear.' I was always thinking of the future for so many years and I was always anti-romanticising the past," he told AnOther. "I have always hated having my picture taken; I’m not sure why, but maybe it just felt irrelevant to me in terms of what I do. If I could choose to be anonymous I would be—I know it’s a cliché, but it’s true. Now, I have started to look at photographs in a different kind of way, as part of a memory. Many of the photographs I have used on the clothing in this collection are connected to emotions: love, happiness, fear, sadness … they all connect to moments in my life."

The selection of photos include everything from his passport picture and personal candids to beach shots and images from his father’s military days. It's a revealing piece that not only gives us insight to Simons' latest collection, but to his upbringing and personality, as well.
