How Men's Day Paved The Way For Men's Week

Today is the official start of New York Fashion Week, so make sure you're following along on the 'Gram. In just a little bit, we'll be heading to New York Men's Day, a showcase down in the West Village. It's a laid back, presentation style event with 12 emerging designers showing of their upcoming collections. More importantly, this is the third one, making it basically a precursor to this summer's inaugural NYFW: Men's and Fashionista explored the growth of an event that was solely menswear-focused before the CFDA announced the dedicated week.

It all started with Erin Hawker of Agentry PR who realized that her menswear clients needed more exposure and without the huge resources that big names have, it was hard to get. Hence Men's Day, a way to shine the light on the menswear's up and comers. The event has grown from six designers a year ago to 12 today and is broken down into two separate presentations, giving menswear the spotlight it deserves and, well, needs. It brings together young designers, editors and buyers under one roof to shoot the shit, check out some new clothing and keep our tight-knit menswear community close with an air of openness rather than trade secrets. And because of the success that NYMD has had, Steven Kolb of the CFDA had the foundation and interest that helped sparked the movement for NYFW: Men's. Without Agentry PR and the work behind Men's Day, we very well might not be getting that coveted week this summer. Praises are most definitely in order.
