The term "pole dancing" probably brings to mind images of scantily clad women and slack-jawed men, but in reality, pole dancing is more than just a seedy strip club phenomenon. Today, this form of performative art has evolved into a popular type of exercise, demanding an impressive amount of endurance, balance, and flexibility.

Dutch photographer Bart Erkamp realized this when he witnessed a pole fitness competition in Amsterdam. He was even more impressed when he learned that many dancers install poles in their own homes and decided to photograph these dedicated individuals practicing in domestic spaces. By capturing pole dancing outside its usually erotic context, Erkamp highlights the artistry and athleticism that is necessary of the sport. In fact, the International Pole Sports Federation is calling for pole dancing to be included in the 2016 Olympics, claiming it is a legitimate sport. And, judging from Erkamp's photographs, we're inclined to agree.
