According to multiple emails received by Gawker, the retail megapower sent around a flyer for its annual holiday party, held at the company HQ in Philadelphia. Nothing wrong with that, except the part where they encouraged guests to bring all manners of Orientalist stereotypes as costumes.
Yeah, so, for those who somehow have missed the memo, using other cultures as costumes isn't funny or creative; it's cultural appropriation and it's offensive. It's why fraternities keep getting in trouble for poorly thought out theme parties. So rock on, Urban Outfitters; your holiday bash is as politically correct as "Sexy Border Patrol" parties.
