Amid various release delays and an ugly conflict with his label, Tyga has finally revealed the cover for his new album, The Gold Album: 18th Dynasty. Designed by Kanye West's creative company, DONDA, the album features an Egyptian-style gold eagle pendant on a gold background. Tyga unveiled the album cover on Instagram today with the caption, "#TheGoldAlbum cover created by Kanye & Donda. made out of real gold. #Kingin"
The clean cover is what we've come to expect from DONDA, who most recently designed Nicki Minaj's cover art for The Pinkprint. In the past, Kanye's mysterious creative collective has worked on his Cruel Summer film, our G.O.O.D. Music Complex cover, album and single covers for A$AP Rocky, Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, Pusha T, Big Sean, and Theophilus London, as well as various work on Kanye's tours. Although it's tough to identify exactly who works on which part of a DONDA project, Virgil Abloh is credited with being the company's creative director. Whoever is behind DONDA, it's undeniable that the company is creating a new brand of cool, and their work with Tyga is just the latest example of their creative influence.
DONDA's concept for The Gold Album most likely came from the 1978 cover of The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire, Vol. 1, where a similar eagle is emblazoned on the album. Updating this concept for 2014, DONDA stripped down Earth Wind & Fire's graphic to a pure and highly textured symbol, much like the simple and sticky thumbprint the company designed for Minaj.
The Gold Album was pushed back multiple times after Tyga was having issues with Cash Money/Young Money Records. In October, he tweeted that his label was holding him hostage, and since then Tyga has announced plans to release his new album independently in 2015.
