For the 10th anniversary this year, a group of 14 designers were invited to redesign the Kartell company's Bourgie Lamp, originally conceived by Ferruccio Laviani. The designs by Philippe Starck, Lenny Kravitz, Nendo, Tokujiin Yoshioka, Patricia Urquiola, Mario Bellini, and others were unveiled at the Kartell flagship in Paris back in January, but that wasn't the extent of the company's anniversary celebration.
Recently, five more design teams were given the same opportunity: Pharrell Williams, Snarkitecture,Rafael de Cárdenas, avaf (Eli Sudbrack), and Kelly Wearstler. The designs were unveiled during NYCxDesign, and Cool Hunting recently posted a few of the sketches by the designers alongside the finished products.
Pharrell continues to show the world that he is more than catchy tunes and huge hats, and that he is very much a part of the art and design world. He has designed chairs and other furniture, collaborated with artists including Daniel Arsham, he is currently curating a "G I R L" exhibition at Galerie Perrotin, and he will be giving a speech at the American Institute of Architects National Convention this summer. As with his chairs, Pharrell incorporated human anatomy into the design, stating that he chose an arm to "represent the will of mankind in the daily plight of escaping the 'shade' and the challenges of attempting to get closer to enlightenment...Illumination was meant to vanquish the 'shade.' The light will forever prevail."
