Maya Angelou's Portrait by Atlanta-Based Artist Ross Rossin Now Hangs in the National Portrait Gallery

After unveiling the portrait last month, the National Portrait Gallery decided to install it upon hearing of Maya Angelou's death.

The portrait above of Maya Angelou was unveiled last month and hung today at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. The unveiling was a part of the poet's 86th birthday celebration and was attended by her family and friends, including Oprah Winfrey and Cicely Tyson.

The portrait artist, Ross Rossin, has done numerous celebrity portraits including Nelson Mandela, Morgan Freeman, and Jimmy Carter. On his Facebook page, Rossin shared this message about Angelou's passing: "I was deeply saddened by the news of Maya Angelou's passing. She was a phenomenal woman who contributed so much to the world. I am honored to have had the opportunity to be in the presence of her light."
