London-born, New York-based photographer Janette Beckman began photographing the punk scenes in both cities during the 1970s and '80s and built a reputation as one of the most highly regarded music and cultural photographers of the era. Beckman also photographed the emerging hip hop scene in New York during the '80s and the East LA El Hoyo Maravilla gang culture. An exhibition opening tomorrow will bring together photographs of each of those unique worlds.

"Rebel Cultures: Punks, Rap, and Gangs" opens at HVW8 on April 17 and runs through May 18. The exhibition includes photos of everyone from EPMD and Rakim, to Debbie Harry and Keith Haring. For more information, head to the HVW8 exhibition page.
