In her latest project, Virginia-based ceramic artist Michelle Erickson was inspired by 18th century English table decorations and Nike sneakers. Using local Virginia clay and techniques she pioneered herself, she crafted detailed sculptures using multiple small silicon “spring molds” based Nike’s track and field shoe patterns. So far she has created two sculptures, the Fly Knit Dragon and the Superfly Dragon. These pieces are the first completed works for a project she became involved in while an artist in residence at the V&A with Nike’s 2012 Olympic Track Team. The project’s concept is to investigate the transference of culture through design.

The 9-inch Fly Knit Dragon can be purchased for $12,500, while the slightly larger 11-inch Superfly Dragon is listed at $9,500.
