The jungle gyms on which we used to play as kids make a comeback in Numen/For Use's latest String Prototype, the Crotian-Austrian design collective's template for an inflatable volume of cable cords. The prototype, which is a social sculpture of sorts, is composed of a network of ropes tied from one end of the interior space to the other.
When deflated, the ropes fall loose, allowing the entire structure to be totally compressed. When it's blown up again, all of the ropes re-align and are stretched enough to withstand the weight of multiple humans.
"Bodies entrapped in 3D grid, flying in unnatural positions throughout superficial white space, resemble Dadaist collages. Impossibility of perception of scale and direction results in simultaneous feeling of immenseness and absence of space," the project description reads.
Just like the jungle gyms and monkey bars from our childhood, Numen/For Use's project serves as a space for humans to climb and play.
