Visual artist Patrick Smith has employed minimalism in his effort to conquer the stigma associated with mental disorders. He has created a series of prints that capture the essence of some of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders’ (DSM) most complex and curious conditions.

Smith selected minimalism as his weapon of choice not because he thought any of the psychological conditions he investigated could readily be simplified, but because he thought the method was something all could identify with. His goal is to attract attention beyond the art world community, to send his message to as broad an audience as possible.

Some of his imagery has been criticized for being overly simplistic, but Smith views these negative receptions as irrelevant. “Right or wrong, it created a lot of conversations. Exactly what I wanted,” Smith told TheHuffington Post.
