Although the complaint about new parents posting a million pictures of their ugly babies on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, is pretty modern, its message is timeless. The Renaissance version would go something like, "Stop posing for hours with your ugly and increasingly irritable baby for this ostentatiously large oil painting that you hang shamelessly in the foyer." The Tumblr Ugly Renaissance Babies pays tributes to these less than beautiful children.

We're not sure why babies looked so horrifying in Renaissance paintings, but this Tumblr captures the worst of the best across art history. From big names of the 15th and 16th centuries to more obscure works of scary children, ugly never looked so good.
