The New Museum's Lisa Phillips announced that the institution will convert their nearby property into a 24-hour workspace and educational center, which they refer to as an "incubator for art, technology, and design." Over 60 startups and entrepreneurs will be selected as members by a director and committee through an application process and will join Columbia University's Studio-X in using the 11,000-square-foot space (to be designed by SO-IL architects Florian Idenburg and Jing Liu) and they will attend scheduled lectures, workshops, and seminars (in exchange for a monthly membership fee). With this innovative development, the New Museum hopes to build a "vibrant interdisciplinary community geared toward collaboration and innovation." The application process will be announced early next year and the space is scheduled to open in the summer of 2014.
