At the London Design Festival this year, the Dutch design studio helmed by Tord Boontje debuted gorgeous new furniture featuring surface patterns created in an unconventional way.

Boontje used pigments with magnetic qualities, poured them into liquid resin, and painted a layer of that mixture onto aluminum composite panels. Underneath the surfaces, Boontje arranged a series of “permanent magnets” or used electromagnets to arrange the pigments. He then let the resin dry, to result in the patterns you see above. A unique and experimental process, it took three years of refining the technique to come up with what we see here.

"When you bring together two magnets they either attract or push each other away—if you have more magnets then something more complex starts to happen," Boontje told Dezeen.
