At midnight on September 24, Madonna appeared at Gagosian Gallery in New York for the premiere of her new film project entitled secretprojectrevolution. The film was directed by Steven Klein and is a part of their #ArtforFreedom project, a self-expression initiative that allows users to create and share content that answers the question "What does freedom mean to you?" The film also screened at several locations around the world in cities including Tel Aviv, Berlin, Los Angeles, Rome, Paris, Chicago, and Toronto, and has been posted on YouTube and the ArtforFreedom website.
During the premiere, Madonna was dragged onto stage by two men in police uniforms who roughed her up a bit before handing her a microphone. The performance piece turned into this live cover of Elliot Smith's "Between the Bars":
The film is 17 minutes long and stars Madonna with a host of dancers. The tone is very dark and gothic, with Madge both acting and narrating the black-and-white call for a "revolution" against all kinds of persecution. At the heart of the narrative, the "deviant" Madonna is thrown in jail for her obscenities by "fascist dictators posing as righteous men." Violence, sex, and rebellion are recurring themes in this beautifully shot and perfectly weird piece that is sure to evoke some kind of response (positive or negative) from those who see it.
