It's always intriguing to see documented moments of the past, especially when they are recorded in video. The Guggenheim Archives has recently screened a series of anonymous 8mm films revealing scenes taken in New York City in the early 1970s. A clip features footage of the Meatpacking District, where viewers can witness characteristic elements pertaining to the industrial area such as shots of workers on the streets and rows of trash cans.
From gathering clues from the short clip, mainly the headlines seen in the newspaper featured, commenters on the Guggenheim blog have speculated that the footage was shot on August 16, 1973, the date of President Nixon's statement about Watergate. Regardless of the actual date of filming, what is more interesting is that in some aspects, is that the city looks very similar to how it does today.
