Miranda July Is Bringing Lena Dunham and Kirsten Dunst to Your Inbox with "We Think Alone"

Film director, actress, and artist Miranda July is invading email inboxes with celebrities. For the next 19 Mondays, she will be sending out subscribers to her We Think Alone private emails from people like Lena Dunham, Kirsten Dunst, Kareem Abdul-Jabar, and photographer Catherine Opie. “I have always loved reading other people’s emails,” July told Huffington Post. “There is something about the mundane-ness that feels very intimate to me.”

The first one was sent out yesterday with the topic of money. Different big names talk about topics like project costs, funding requests, and more. Lena Dunham talks about a couch she was going to potentially buy for over $24,000 but she “decided it’s just too expensive.” Oh, poor Lena. What will she ever do without a $24k sofa? She tweeted about the experience:

Canadian writer Sheila Heti said in an email, “I have less than $1,000 in the bank and no credit card debt and no savings.” She talks about the pains of the publishing industry, having not been paid enough for foreign rights of her book and pitching a story to Glamour.

July's purpose seems to be humanizing big names of the world and showing that no matter who you are, you have something to complain about. She says on the project’s website, “I’m always trying to get my friends to forward me emails they’ve sent to other people....How they comport themselves in email is so intimate, almost obscene ....WE THINK ALONE has given me the excuse to read my friends’ emails and the emails of some people I wish I was friends with and for better or worse it’s changed the way I see all of them.”
