If you think most public spaces are boring and lack creativity, you'll love the work of Dutch artist Thor ter Kulve. The designer adds fun installations to urban facilities—like clamp-on swings to a pole, a sprinkler to a fire hydrant, and a balloon-like cover to a regular street lamp—in order to transform otherwise bleak spaces into active places with more character. While his installations are only temporary and leave the original sites unaltered, throughout the duration of their display, they are able to suggest a new meaning and purpose to conventional structures. Ter Kulve's street art creates new platforms for interaction, while allowing the public to shift their understanding of the built environment.
