Jeremy Deller explores his roots and context in British society throughout his art, as he finds inspiration for his creations in the cultures and politics that exist within personal and political spheres. His exhibition "English Magic" is on display at the British Pavilion for the Venice Biennale 2013, and will continue on its national tour throughout 2014. Including a series of painted murals, historical artifacts, and displays featuring David Bowie and Tony Blair, the exhibition encompasses a full timeline of the people, places, and events that have shaped British politics and society.
While some displays take on a more serious tone in depicting depressing scenes, others are more playful and suggest a more uplifting fate for the UK. A mural is found presenting a tax haven city in flames, as images from labor demonstrations during the Troubles is shown alongside footage from David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust" tour in 1973. Also seen is video of people enjoying his stonehenge exhibition commemorating the London Olympic Games, as the artist suggests a present, past, and possible future state of the UK, as perceived by himself.
