If you grew up with braces on, you might have been called unfortunate names like metal mouth, brace face, or train tracks. But today’s youth in countries like Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, you would be the most popular kid on the block.

Fake braces are selling like the next new limited edition release among South Asian youths. Similar to the average BMW or Louis Vuitton purchase, having braces is another way to show off wealth. Real ones cost around $1,200, but for the kids who want to fake it ‘til they make it, they can purchase phony braces on the black market for $100 dollars a piece. Designs can range from the colorful to graphics that include Micky Mouse and Hello Kitty. Screw a trip to the orthodontist because you can put these ones on yourself. There’s even a tutorial.
